vital hubs on the world\u2019s most important trade route \u2013 the Silk Road. There are few more evocative place names than Samarkand, a city of caravanserais, dazzling mosques and monuments \u2013 not least the legendary Registan \u2013 but it\u2019s far from alone in Uzbekistan. Bukhara and Khiva also gleam with the architectural bounty of the country\u2019s medieval wealth: palaces, minarets, mausoleums and\u00a0<em>medressas<\/em>\u00a0(Islamic schools), all intricately decorated with blue-toned tiles, grace the squares.<\/p>\n<\/div>        \r\n    <div class=\"wak-hidden-copy wak-body-standard-text\" ><p>There are plenty of other historical relics of past glories, too \u2013 roam the ancient Khorezm region around Urgench to explore the remains of two-milliennia-old\u00a0<em>qalas<\/em>\u00a0(fortresses).
